Michael Smith

Michael is a partner practicing in the areas of criminal, civil and administrative law. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 2002 following his graduation from the University of Manitoba. Michael is a law professor at Carleton University where he has been teaching various aspects of criminal law for over a decade.

Michael competed in the sport of Greco-Roman wrestling and was a member of the Canadian national team for 6 years, representing Canada at the World and Pan Am Championships. Michael was the alternate on the Canadian Olympic team and is the Past President of Athletes CAN. Between 2002 and 2008, he was lead counsel for Team Canada at various major Games competition such as the Commonwealth, Pan Ams, Francophonie and Olympic Games.

With a background in sports and law, Michael has established himself as a sports leader in Canada, working on behalf of athletes and sport organizations.

In 2016, Michael became an Arbitrator presiding over cases involving sport disputes relating to issues of team selection, athlete’s assistance, and sexual assault. Michael continues to preside over cases when called upon to apply his expertise.

In 2018, Michael was selected as a member of the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada (SDRCC) Investigations Unit. He is one of thirteen certified independent investigators in the country dealing with issues involving sexual assault, harassment and discrimination.
